When Israel Idonije (entrepreneur, philanthropist, and former defensive end with the Chicago Bears football team) contacted me to design his brand new co-working and event space located in the heart of Chicago’s South Loop, he showed me a Chesterfield couch that he was considering. I saw it and I immediately knew where I wanted to go with the design plan.
For this space’s design I wanted to make it primarily masculine with vintage and feminine accessories. I collected so many great finds for the space including vintage cameras, vintage binoculars, a vintage typewriter, insects encased in resin, and lacquered turtle backs. I also wanted to discretely incorporate hexagons throughout the space. The hexagon shape is the main element of The Bureau’s logo and so it was important for me that the brand identity consistently remained throughout the space’s aesthetic (but with a certain subtlety).
The Bureau is a space that boasts 9,000 square feet of clean, modern lines mixed with a lofty, industrial aesthetic. The glass balconies, steel frames, high ceilings and exposed brick are dream elements that I’m certain grace the vision boards of many (my own Pinterest boards are chock full of them). I had so many fun designing this space.
The foliage arrangements were created by Michelle Gaona.
The Bureau is located at 1420 S. Michigan. Contact Emmanuel Idonije to inquire about space rentals.
