Art I Love: Mickalene Thomas

Mickalene Thomas‘s paintings are known to be adorned with acrylics, rhinestones, and enamel. A Pratt Institute and Yale University graduate, her work is reminiscent of the 1970s Blaxploitation era that radiates femininity and sexuality. She explores and expands on the discussion of what it means to be a woman.

Thomas had the honor of painting the first individual portrait of First Lady Michelle Obama which was exhibited in the National Portrait Gallery’s Americans Now show.
