Companhia Urbana de Dança frrom Brazil, a dance company founded by Sonia Destri, combines contemporary, urban and Brazilian social dances. Featuring an all male ensemble, the company performs pieces inspired by the streets of Rio, Brazil. he New York Observer describes the program as, “[eight] terrific guys mixing hip-hop and modern-dance moves in a totally satisfying work…hip-hop was used to an artistic end and not merely as exhibitionism, however exciting.” The company’s 2010 U.S. debut was ranked among Time Out New York’s “Top 10″ dance performances of the year. I can easily pick up on many dance styles in this choreography including the Midwest footwork techniques (“juke” from Chicago and “jit” from Detroit), traditional West-African dance, capoeira, and Caribbean dancehall. What other forms of dance do you detect?
